1 dead and several injured in I-70 accident
ST. CHARLES COUNTY (KMOV.com)
St. Charles County authorities responded to a fatal, two-vehicle crash that closed all eastbound lanes on Interstate 70 near Foristell Monday morning.
All lanes of traffic reopened around 10:45 a.m.
The accident occurred just after 7:30 a.m. near the weigh station at mile marker 203.
Missouri Highway Patrol says the driver of the Honda Civic, Nadeira Dolmo Rivera, 23, was traveling westbound when Rivera fell asleep at the wheel. The car traveled through across the median, through the cable barriers and into oncoming traffic. The car hit a Chevy Malibu traveling eastbound. There were seven people inside the Honda Civic. The passenger, Santos Rivera Ayala De Dolmo, 51, died at the scene. De Dolmo was from Los Angeles. Nadeira Rivera, a 21-year-old and a 35-year-old are all in serious condition. Three children, ages 1, 3 and 5 were also injured.
A good Samaritan says he and others tried to help one child ejected.
“I looked over and saw a child on the highway that was horrific,” said Sean Hinkle, who tried to help. “You see situations you really want to push for seat belt safety and car seat safety.”
The 41-year-old woman from Warrenton in the other vehicle is also in serious condition.
Several of the people in the other vehicle are from Kansas City.
Investigators from Missouri Highway Patrol say it is too early to say whether charges could be filed. Once the investigation is complete they will send it to the county prosecutor for review.
